How Wholesale Baby Formula Case Pricing Works: Cost per Box, MOQ & Landed Cost

September 30, 2026

Quick answer: wholesale case pricing should be evaluated at more than one level. Buyers need the total case price, the number of boxes in the case, the effective cost per box and any shipping or import costs that affect landed cost. A lower case total does not automatically mean a better commercial buy if the case size, freight or shelf-life profile is different.

Start with the case, then calculate cost per box

A wholesale formula offer should state exactly how many retail boxes are included. The basic calculation is:

Metric Formula
Cost per box Case price ÷ number of boxes
Gross profit per box Retail selling price − cost per box
Gross margin % Gross profit ÷ retail selling price × 100

Use the live product page for the current case tiers and price-per-box display. Different SKUs can have different case structures, so avoid assuming one brand or stage uses the same configuration as another.

MOQ and case pack are not the same thing

A minimum order quantity (MOQ) is the smallest quantity a supplier will accept. A case pack is the commercial packaging unit used for a product. On our wholesale store there is no single site-wide MOQ; the smallest available case tier shown for the SKU is the current minimum purchasable quantity for that product.

Add shipping to understand landed cost

For a simple landed-cost estimate, add the order-level shipping charge and any buyer-paid import costs, then allocate those costs across the number of units purchased. Destination-country duties, taxes or compliance costs may also apply.

Check current shipping options on our wholesale shipping page and at checkout. The checkout result is the order-specific source for available services and charges.

Why the cheapest case is not always the best case

  • A larger case may lower cost per box but tie up more cash.
  • A slower-moving stage can increase expiry risk.
  • A smaller case may preserve working capital and assortment flexibility.
  • Freight allocation can change the economics of small and large orders.
  • Current stock depth matters when planning repeat purchases.

Case-pricing checklist for buyers

  1. Confirm the exact SKU and stage.
  2. Record boxes per case.
  3. Record case price and cost per box.
  4. Add shipping and any importer-side costs.
  5. Compare with the intended retail selling price.
  6. Check remaining shelf life when it is material to the order.
  7. Estimate how quickly the case will sell through.

Where to compare current case tiers

Start with the formula directory, then open the exact PDP to compare current case quantities and live availability. For unusually large quantities, batch questions or documentation needs, use our trade contact page.

Worked example: comparing two case tiers

Suppose the same SKU is offered as an 8-box case and a 12-box case. The larger case may have the lower cost per box, but the buyer should also estimate how long each case will take to sell. If the 12-box option saves $1.50 per box but adds several weeks of stock cover, the decision depends on cash flow, expiry buffer and expected demand—not only on the unit discount.

A useful comparison sheet therefore includes case cost, boxes per case, landed cost per box, expected weekly sales, weeks of stock and target gross margin. This turns a price comparison into a purchasing decision.

Keep product economics separate from retail price policy

Wholesale cost is only one side of the equation. Retailers may have different pricing policies, local taxes, marketplace fees or promotional strategies. The supplier's case price should feed into the retailer's model, not dictate the final selling price.

Frequently asked questions

Is cost per box the same as landed cost per box?

No. Cost per box usually refers to the product portion of the case price. Landed cost can also include shipping, duties, taxes and other buyer-side costs.

Should retailers always choose the largest case?

No. Larger cases can improve unit economics but increase cash tied up in stock and potential expiry exposure.

Does every formula have the same MOQ?

No. Use the smallest available case tier shown on the exact product page.
